Tamiya, with its wide array of offerings, doesn’t always release something completely new. Tamiya fans know this. But they also know when the big T does come out with an all new vehicle, it’s often pretty good. Case in point, Tamiya has a new offbeat addition to its fleet of RC vehicles, the GF-01 chassis with Toyota Land Cruiser 40–pick-up truck version no less.

The GF-01 chassis shares some similarity with its close cousin, the WR-02 platform used for the likes of the Wild Willy 2, Volkswagen Type 2 and the Farm King Wheelie.

The original Wild Willy was introduced in 1982. That’s a long time ago! The Wild Willy 2 was released in 1999.

However, those kits feature a 2WD drivetrain, whereas the new GF-01 is a single motor centrally mounted 4WD setup. Having the motor directly in the center allows for stable off-road handling. Wheelie action is still possible thanks to its short wheel base and high mounted battery It uses front and rear rear differentials in sealed gearboxs that integrated in the frame.

Needless to say. much like the Farm King and and Wild Willy, this new re-incarnation of the chassis and new body should add to the fun in anyone’s RC collection. The speed control, which Tamiya says runs brushed and brushless motors, is included, but you will require a 2-channel radio, battery and charge and paint for the body.

The full size Toyota J40 is the model designation for a Toyota Land Cruiser 40 series made from 1960 until 1984. Most 40 series Land Cruisers were built as two-door vehicles with slightly larger dimensions than a Jeep CJ. The Toyota Land Cruiser is a popular off-road vehicle that needs little introduction to full-size off-road enthusiasts It was produced for almost 25 years and is much loved for its durability and adaptability.

  1. The tires look kinda big, but I get the look Tamiya is going for. More of a fooling around kinda of vehicle. My kids would have fun with it. I wonder if that body would fit a scx10???

  2. Tamiya has always had a degree of over-sized gross features from time to time on some rigs. We know it’s on purpose. Look at the Wild Willy driver figure. 🙂

Exact size on the body isn’t clear; most likely 1/12 scale as indicated. Not a true 1/10 scale. But with a short wheel base chassis like the one from STRC, it may have enough to adapt this type of body. We will just have to wait and see. This wheelbase is pretty tight.
