Are Semi Truck Drivers Self-Employed?

Semi-truck drivers are often classified as self-employed or independent contractors. This classification is based on the fact that semi-truck drivers typically own their own vehicles, set their own schedule and are responsible for their own expenses. However, many semi-truck drivers are actually employed by companies that hire them to transport goods and materials across the country.

Semi-truck drivers can be either employee truckers or independent contractors. Employee truckers work for specific companies and enter into an employment agreement with those companies.

They receive a salary or wage and may receive additional benefits such as health insurance, paid vacation time and a 401k plan. Employee truckers are also typically required to abide by a company’s policies regarding safety and delivery deadlines.

Independent contractors, on the other hand, do not enter into an employment agreement with any company. They operate as their own businesses and set their own rates for services rendered. Independent contractors are responsible for paying their own taxes, purchasing their own fuel, maintaining their vehicles and setting up contracts with customers.

Most professional semi-truck drivers choose to become independent contractors because it allows them more freedom than being an employee trucker. They can choose when they want to work, how long they want to drive each day, where they want to travel and who they want to work with. Independent contractors are also able to charge whatever rate they feel is fair for the services provided.

Ultimately, whether a semi-truck driver is considered self-employed or an employee depends on the individual’s specific situation. If the driver has entered into an employment agreement with a company then they would be considered an employee trucker but if they have set up an independent business then they would be classified as self employed.
