How Do You Install a 5th Wheel Hitch in a Short Bed Truck?

Installing a fifth wheel hitch in a short bed truck is an important part of the process when it comes to safely towing larger trailers. While navigating the installation process can seem daunting, it’s important to understand that with the right tools, knowledge and patience, you can have your hitch up and running in no time.

The first step is to select the right fifth wheel hitch for your needs. Choose one that fits both your vehicle type and trailer type, as well as its weight capacity.

Once you’ve selected a hitch, you’ll need to locate the factory-installed mounting plate in your truck’s bed. This mounting plate will serve as the base for your fifth wheel hitch.

Next, you’ll need to measure and mark out where the mounting brackets should be installed on the frame rails of your truck. Be sure to double check all measurements before drilling any holes or inserting any bolts.

Securely Attach Mounting Brackets:

Once you’ve marked out where the mounting brackets should go on your frame rails, use a drill bit and self-tapping screws to securely attach them in place. Be sure to use a level when doing this step so that all brackets are attached straight.

Install Hitch Head:

Now it’s time to install the hitch head onto its designated base plate. With help from another person if available, carefully fit the head into place and tighten down all necessary bolts using an appropriate socket wrench.

Connect Safety Chains:

Once you’ve installed your hitch head onto its base plate, it’s time to connect safety chains from either side of the head onto their corresponding points on the truck frame rail.

Connect Electrical Wiring:

With safety chains secured in place, you can now move on to connecting electrical wiring between your truck’s battery and trailer brake lights. This will allow for proper communication between both vehicles while they are connected.

Installing a fifth wheel hitch in a short bed truck is not an overly difficult task but it does require precise measurements and careful installation procedures in order to ensure that everything is properly secured and functioning correctly. Be sure to take extra care when measuring out where brackets should be attached and follow each step closely for best results.
