How Does a Semi Truck Air Compressor Work?

A semi truck air compressor is an essential component of a big rig’s air braking system. Semi truck air compressors are responsible for generating and maintaining the pressure necessary to activate the brakes, which is why these machines are essential for safe operation of large commercial trucks. Without a working compressor, a semi truck driver would not be able to safely maneuver their vehicle.

The air compressor works by converting energy from the engine into compressed air, which is then stored in an air tank and used as needed. This compressed air is used to activate the braking system by pushing pistons or levers that move the brakes. The brake lines are connected to the air tank so that when pressure is applied, it will cause the brakes to engage.

The compressor is powered directly by the engine’s crankshaft, which drives a belt that rotates a set of flywheels inside of the compressor. As these flywheels spin, they create suction which draws in ambient air from outside of the engine compartment. When it’s time for braking, this pressurized air is released through hoses and valves into actuators connected to each wheel on the truck. This causes pistons within each actuator to push against brake pads on each wheel, activating them and slowing down or stopping the vehicle.
