How Often Should You Rotate Tires on a Pickup Truck?

The lifespan of tires on a pickup truck can be greatly extended if they are routinely rotated. It is recommended that tires on a pickup truck should be rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles.

This is usually referred to as the “5/7 rule”. For those who drive their trucks for many miles, it is best to rotate the tires at least every 6 months or 8,000 miles.

Tire rotation helps keep the wear and tear on each tire even. If one tire tends to wear out faster than the others, rotating it with another tire can help prevent premature replacement. Additionally, rotating your tires can help improve your vehicle’s handling and performance by helping ensure proper balance.

When rotating the tires, it is important to use the correct pattern depending on whether or not your vehicle has asymmetrical or directional treads. Asymmetrical treads feature tread patterns that are different from one side of the tire to the other. Directional treads feature patterns that are designed specifically for forward and backward rotation.

The Proper Tire Rotation Pattern for Pickup Trucks:

  • For Asymmetrical Tread:
    • Front Driver’s Side Tire: Move it straight back.
    • Front Passenger’s Side Tire: Move it to the Driver’s Side rear.
    • Rear Driver’s Side Tire: Move it to the Passenger’s Side front.
    • Rear Passenger’s Side Tire: Move it straight forward.

  • For Directional Tread:
    • Front Driver’s Side Tire: Move it straight back.
    • Front Passenger’s Side Tire: Move it straight forward.
    • Rear Driver’s Side Tire: Rotate it in a clockwise direction and move it to the Passenger’s side front.
