The weight of a rollback tow truck depends on the size and type of truck, as well as its configuration. Generally, rollback tow trucks come in one of two sizes—light-duty or heavy-duty—and the weight of each will vary. Additionally, there are several different types of rollback tow truck designs that can affect their weight.
Light-duty rollback tow trucks are typically designed to haul vehicles up to 4,000 pounds in gross vehicle weight (GVW). These trucks usually range from 12,000 to 16,000 pounds in total weight and may have a variety of features and configurations that could add to this number. Some light-duty tow trucks may include an extended bed for extra cargo space, which can add up to an additional 1,500 pounds.
Heavy-duty rollback tow trucks are typically designed for hauling vehicles with a GVW over 10,000 pounds. These types of trucks may weigh up to 25,000 pounds or more depending on their features and configurations. Heavy-duty models may include hydraulic winches for extra power or an elevated bed for increased clearance.
Types Of Rollback Tow Trucks
In addition to size and configuration, the type of rollback tow truck also affects its weight. There are three main types: flatbeds, wheel lift trucks and underlift or boom trucks.
Flatbeds
Flatbed tow trucks have a large flat bed that is used to carry vehicles without having to be hooked up directly to the vehicle. The flatbed is supported by two steel arms that extend out from the back end of the truck and can be raised or lowered using hydraulics.
These types of tow trucks usually weigh between 10,500 and 17,500 pounds depending on their size.
Wheel Lift Trucks
Wheel lift tow trucks use a steel yoke that is attached to the front wheels of a vehicle being towed. This yoke is then lifted off the ground by hydraulics located at the back end of the truck. Wheel lift tow trucks typically weigh between 14,000 and 22,500 pounds depending on their size.
Underlift Or Boom Trucks
Underlift or boom trucks use an extendable arm with a claw at one end that is used to attach directly onto vehicles being towed. This arm is then raised into place using hydraulics located at the back end of the truck. Underlift or boom tow trucks usually weigh between 15,000 and 25,000 pounds depending on their size.
The weight of a rollback tow truck depends on its size and configuration as well as its type – whether it’s a light duty or heavy duty model. Light duty models range from 12k-16k lbs while heavy duty models range from 25k lbs upwards based on features such as winches or extended beds . Additionally there are three main types – flatbeds , wheel lift and underlift/boom – each with its own associated weights based on size .
