What Semi Truck Does the Military Use?

The U.S. military relies on semi-trucks for a variety of tasks. From transporting supplies to supporting combat operations, heavy-duty trucks are the backbone of military logistics. The most commonly used semi-truck in the military is the Oshkosh Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT), which is a series of 8×8 and 10×10 off-road vehicles developed by Oshkosh Corporation for the U. Army and Marine Corps.

The HEMTT is designed to carry heavy loads over rough terrain, making it ideal for military operations in remote areas and during long deployments.

It can carry up to 9 tons of cargo or be outfitted with a shelter or other specialized equipment. It has an off-road suspension system that allows it to traverse difficult terrain, while its powerful engine gives it a top speed of 55 mph on paved roads and 35 mph off-road.

HEMTT Variants

The HEMTT comes in several variants, each designed for a specific mission:

  • M977 Cargo Truck – This is the basic version of the HEMTT, designed to carry cargo with a payload capacity of up to 9 tons.
  • M978 Fuel Tanker – This variant carries fuel, with a capacity of up to 3,000 gallons.
  • M985 Cargo/Troop Carrier – This version can transport troops as well as cargo.
  • M983 Tractor – This version is equipped with an articulated trailer hitch and can tow trailers up to 28 tons.
  • M1075 Platoons/Squad Leaders Vehicle – This variant is equipped with enhanced communications systems and other specialized equipment.

Other Semi Trucks Used by Military

In addition to the HEMTT, there are several other semi-trucks used by the U. military:

                      1. Stryker Logistics Vehicle System Replacement (LVSR) – A 12×12 truck used by Marines for transporting supplies and personnel.
