Who Made a Convertible Pickup Truck?

The convertible pickup truck has become something of a rarity in recent times. But, who made the first ever convertible pickup truck? The answer to that question isn’t all that easy to answer, as there are a few contenders for the title.

Ford is often credited with the invention of the first ever convertible pickup truck. It was in 1934 when Ford released its first model, known as the ‘Model 40A’.

This vehicle had an open cab and a folding top which could be opened or closed at will. It was unique, as it was one of the few vehicles of its kind that had an open-air design.

However, Chevrolet also deserves some credit for producing their own version of the convertible pickup truck. In 1935, they released their version called the ‘Suburban Carryall’. This vehicle featured an open-air cab and a removable top which could be removed and stored in the back of the vehicle when not needed.

While both Ford and Chevrolet can claim to be pioneers in this area, Willys-Overland can also stake a claim to having produced one of the earliest convertible pickup trucks. In 1936, they released their ‘Jeepster’ model which featured a folding canvas top and rear-mounted spare wheel. This vehicle was much more practical than its predecessors and it set a precedent for future designs.

Other Manufacturers

In addition to Ford, Chevrolet and Willys-Overland there have been other manufacturers who have produced various models of convertible pickup trucks over the years. Companies such as GMC, Dodge and International Harvester have all had their own versions at one time or another.

In conclusion, there are several contenders for who made the first ever convertible pickup truck but it appears that Ford were among the pioneers in this area with their Model 40A from 1934. However, Chevrolet were not far behind with their Suburban Carryall from 1935 and Willys-Overland followed suit shortly afterwards with their Jeepster from 1936.

Conclusion: Who Made a Convertible Pickup Truck?

It seems that Ford were among the earliest producers of convertible pickup trucks with their Model 40A in 1934; however Chevrolet and Willys-Overland also deserve credit for producing similar vehicles shortly afterwards in 1935 and 1936 respectively. Other manufacturers such as GMC, Dodge and International Harvester have also produced various models over subsequent years too.
