How Old Do You Have to Be to Drive a Semi Truck in Texas?

Driving a semi truck, also known as an 18-wheeler, is a big responsibility. It takes a lot of training and practice to become a safe and responsible semi truck driver. In Texas, the minimum age to obtain a commercial driver’s license (CDL), which is required to drive a semi truck, is 18 years old.

Before getting their CDL, individuals must first obtain their Class A learner’s permit from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

To qualify for the permit, applicants must be at least 18 years old, pass written tests on general knowledge and transporting hazardous materials as well as a vision test. Once they have obtained their learner’s permit, applicants can take driving lessons with an instructor for up to six months before being eligible for the CDL exam. The exam consists of three parts: a vehicle inspection test, basic control test and road test.

Once all the tests have been passed successfully and the permit has been upgraded to a CDL, the holder can legally operate semi trucks in Texas. Those who are under 21 years old are restricted to driving only within state borders while those over 21 may drive interstate.

Additional Requirements

In addition to meeting the age requirement set by Texas law, applicants must also pass drug tests and background checks before they can receive their Class A learner’s permit or CDL. Individuals must also complete periodic physical examinations every two years in order to maintain their CDL.

In order to drive a semi truck in Texas you must be at least 18 years old. You will need to obtain your Class A learner’s permit from the Texas Department of Public Safety by passing written tests and vision exams.
