Did Volvo Make a Pickup Truck?

Volvo has been known for making reliable cars since its inception in 1927. The Swedish brand has become synonymous with safety and innovation, but one thing it hasn’t been associated with is pickup trucks. That’s because Volvo has never produced a pickup truck.

The closest Volvo has ever come to making a pickup truck was the C303, an off-road vehicle designed to traverse difficult terrain. The C303 was originally designed as an ambulance and military vehicle, but it eventually found its way into civilian hands and was used as an off-roader by some. While the C303 had some of the traits of a pickup truck – like 4 wheel drive and a cargo bed – it was never marketed as a pickup truck and lacked features like a cab or interior seating.

Despite never producing a pickup truck, Volvo did explore the idea in the late 1950s when they developed the LCP 2000 concept car. The LCP 2000 featured a two-door cab with seating for four, as well as an integrated cargo bed in the back that could be used to transport goods or materials. Unfortunately, this concept never made it into production and Volvo eventually abandoned their plans for a pickup truck.

While Volvo has never made their own pickup truck, they did collaborate with Mitsubishi Motors on one model – the Mitsubishi L200/Volvo TGB 11R. This model was essentially a rebadged version of Mitsubishi’s L200 that featured distinct styling cues from Volvo such as different grilles, bumpers, tail lights and interior trim pieces. The L200/TGB 11R was produced from 1981 to 1985 before being discontinued due to poor sales.

In conclusion, while Volvo has come close to producing its own pickup truck over the years, they have yet to make one themselves. They have collaborated with other automakers on pickups before but have not yet ventured into making their own model since the L200/TGB 11R in 1981.
